While browsing for best view in Shanghai, I came across a million images online and each one was offering a unique view of this gigantic city. All of a sudden, I decided to visit Shanghai for a weekend just to witness the amazing view of the bund.
Shanghai is China’s largest city by population, financial centre and a transportation hub. It is an amazing cosmopolitan city that offers one of the most amazing skylines in East Asia. It is also referred to as the ‘showpiece’ of the booming economy of mainland China. Due to its favourable port location, the importance of Shanghai grew in the 19th century. Today, this Chinese city is one of the most fastest growing cities in the world. It offers a spectacular skyline that leaves no visitor disappointed. Your visit to China would be incomplete without visiting Shanghai.
Wanda Reign on the Bund
After a thoughtful research, I decided to stay at Wanda Reign on the Bund cause its location offers the most amazing view of the Bund. Recently opened in 2016, Wanda Hotels & Resorts made its grand debut in Shanghai with its flagship hotel, Wanda Reign on the Bund after Wuhan and Chengdu. Wanda Reign on the Bund sets spectacular new standards in design, luxury and comfort, and has been meticulously designed and built to showcase the latest embodiment of Wanda excellence. The designers combined and infused unique patterns and textures inspired by old Shanghai elements and classical architecture to create a stunning new landmark along the Bund.
I took an afternoon flight from London Heathrow and arrived early morning in Shanghai. The flight timings were perfect as I was able to take a few hours sleep on the plane and landed fresh in my favourite Chinese city. The hotel had arranged a pick-up for me, so I arrived in style to spend a relaxed weekend in Shanghai.
As it was still early to check-in to my room, I left my luggage with the concierge and went straight to the RuiKu rooftop bar to start capturing the amazing bund views. This rooftop bar, located on the 21st floor, offers the ultimate luxury dining experience to its guest and customers. The official hours start at 14:00, but they were very kind to let me in early so I could enjoy some me time at the bar. I started my day with a brunch at the RuiKu rooftop bar.
After spending some quality time at the bar, I was ready to explore the Bund area. Due to the marvellous location of the hotel, I didn’t have to take any transport to the key attractions. I simply walked and followed the river without using any GPS or guidance. The bund area is absolutely sensational. I couldn’t take my eyes of the amazing skyline. I kept walking and ended up at the Waibaidu Bridge, also known as the ‘Garden Bridge’. This is a key spot to admire the beauty of Shanghai’s skyline under a steel frame.
After spending Saturday afternoon outside, it was time to head back to the hotel for a nap before exploring more of the hotel. As I was there only for the weekend, I wanted to capture all the angles of the Bund in my camera. Arriving back to the hotel, I spend some time in admiring the beautiful art-work. The masterpiece ‘Splendid Oriental’ in the lobby, painted by the famous artist She Qi in 2015, measures 8 x 8 metres and took almost half a year to complete. The whole work takes the famous metropolis, Shanghai and uses women from all over the world as the pattern of manifestation, and utilises a combination of concretisation, impression and abstraction as the technique of expression, combining various urban characteristics including architectural styles, bridges, roadways, landscapes and costumes.
Every corner of the hotel had adopted an art-piece to elaborate it’s tribute to modern art and design.
The hotel features 190 luxurious guestrooms including 13 uniquely designed suites, ranging from 45 square meters to 288 square meters, with stunning views of the Bund, Huangpu River, Pudong skyline and the ancient Yu Garden. Guestrooms are designed in two distinctive styles – Trendy with high energy and Noble, Luxurious and Distinguished. The unmistakable Art Deco theme is enhanced with eye-catching details such as amber-coloured rhinestones, 3D mosaic murals and elaborate embroideries, immersing each room in lavish beauty and creating a sophisticated atmosphere. Extending the extravagance to the last detail, all rooms are elegantly furnished and feature specially curated artworks by well-known contemporary Chinese artists.
The suite had several facilities including:
- Magnificent views of the Huangpu River and Pudong skyline
- A separate living room, dining room, dressing room, deluxe marble bathroom and a guest powder room
- Ogawa massage chair
- Personal iPad to control a 55” B&O LCD television and its 5.1 speaker system, three-layer curtain, thermostat settings, adjust lights, order in-room dining and etc
- PM2.5 Cleaning System
- Nespresso™ coffee machine
- Digital door viewer and complimentary WIFI
- Heating bathroom floor system
- Separate luxurious shower room and bathtub
- Automatic induction toilet
- Acqua di Parma amenities
After taking a little nap in the room, it was time to enjoy Shanghai’s finest cuisine. Because the hotel had several restaurants and meal options, I didn’t have to go outside. I decided to visit their award winning River Drunk Huaiyang resturant. It is inspired by the culture of Jiangnan region, with traditional folding screens, antique curio shelves, brush paintings and lacquer furniture. Its entrance is marked with a stunning masterpiece of glazed glass that conveys the graceful beauty of the bamboo forest. I treated myself to the finest cuisine in the city at this restaurant, served by the most amazing staff I’ve ever met.
I don’t remember last time when I ate that much food. The food was absolutely delicious that I can still remember the taste of those dishes in my mouth. The staff at the restaurant was icing on the cake, extremely courteous, welcoming and friendly. They made my first night in Shanghai the most memorable.
Next day I woke up fresh and helped myself with a selection of teas provided in the room. As I had to catch the afternoon flight back to London, I only had time to enjoy a big breakfast before my flight. The view from the room and the hotel looked amazing both during the day and night. It was the best decision to stay at Wanda Reign on the Bund to experience the unforgettable views of the city without wandering around too much within the short time that I had in Shanghai.
My overall verdict about my stay at Wanda Reign on the Bund is Extremely Positive. Fantastic view of the Bund, comfy bed, relaxing bath, delicious meals, splendid art-work and courteous staff, what else could I wish for to make my stay perfect?
Special thanks to the amazing Wanda Reign team, in particular, Director and Manager of Marketing Communications, Stefie Ma and Viki Yang respectively, who has showed me around the hotel and shared knowledgeable information about the art-work in the hotel.
So, if you’re looking for somewhere to stay in Shanghai, my recommendation would be Wanda Reign only due to its fantastic location and unforgettable views of the city.
See you at other destinations around the world!
